The track this month that does remind of Zep (Led Zeppelin) is "Way Down," 6:58 finale of self-released Fawn by Colorado’s Aziza Smith, both thanks to her bands brontosaur stomp and ’cause of how she builds from a historic blues-mama opening to climatic "way down way down aouh aoh aoh oah" howling in the middle. But then she starts talking: "So you don’t like cats? Too bad–God does. You don’t like dogs? Tough! God does." Album opener "I Will Be Your Voice", sonically suggesting an outtake from Patti Smith’s most metal album Radio Ethiopia, is nearly as mutso, with Aziza tallying names of vivisection-happy nations then some Von Lmo-like robot showing up to chant "Enter 2000. Enter 2000. Enter 2000." The CD’s midsection features smooth jazz sax, ’50s sock hop, a tango, dreary PJ Harvey goth-blues, French wordy rappinghood, and angry Jesus talk, all in the service of animals. The booklet’s got cute photos of harp seals and polar bears, plus pro-beastie Proverbs and Ecclesiastes verses. Goal: An animal sanctuary call Faith Village. Quick, somebody warn Ted Nugent!
